Storms have walloped the Pacific Northwest, Midwest, Plains, South and Northeast with low temperatures, heavy snow, ice storms, freezing rain and high winds for the past two weeks. Tina Kotek on Thursday declared a statewide emergency following deadly ice storms. Trees and power lines already coated with ice could topple if they get more, the National Weather Service warned. “Stay safe out there over the next several days as our region tries to thaw out,” the weather service said. The National Weather Service said there could be a thaw next week, when the forecast calls for above-average temperatures across almost the whole country.

OHIO ABORTION RIGHTSOhioans voted to enshrine abortion rights in the state constitution, Edison Research projected, which will render moot a six-week abortion limit signed into law by Republican Governor Mike DeWine. The ban is currently on hold pending litigation at the conservative state Supreme Court. The success of Ohio's ballot measure initiative, which put the question of abortion rights to voters directly, adds to a string of ballot measure victories for abortion rights supporters since the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade. PENNSYLVANIA SUPREME COURTThe race for a new state Supreme Court justice will not alter the liberal tilt of Pennsylvania's highest court but could have future implications for abortion rights and election laws in the state. Democrats have a 4-2 majority in the partisan state court, with one vacant seat to be filled in this election.

CNN —Why should you care about Tuesday’s elections in Ohio, Kentucky, Mississippi and Virginia? The storylines to watch include abortion, disinformation, dirty money and a test of that elusive but essential creature known as the red state Democrat. John Avlon CNNLet’s start with the Buckeye State, where abortion rights are on the ballot. Beshear is also the rare red state Democrat who can connect with rural voters — something Democrats desperately need more of. Meanwhile in Mississippi, there’s another governor’s race that The Washington Post is calling the most competitive in 20 years.

In 2021, Republicans retook the Virginia House. The Virginia Senate wasn’t up in 2021 – state senators face their voters every four years. That one time was in 2011, when the two parties ended up tied in the state Senate, with the Republican lieutenant governor serving as the tie-breaker. Democrats hold the thinnest of majorities in the state Senate, while Republicans narrowly control the state House. In those elections, Democrats have been greatly outperforming the Democratic baseline (measured by comparing their candidates’ performances with Biden’s in 2020).

THE PLAINS, Va.—For clues about the strength of both parties’ messages heading into 2024, look no further than this suburban Northern Virginia enclave, where Democrats and Republicans are betting big on a hotly contested state Senate race. Typically, such local elections don’t have a major impact outside their direct communities. But this one could decide control of the Virginia legislature and Republican Gov. Glenn Youngkin ’s ability to enact conservative policies on abortion, taxes and education—making it closely watched in the run up to next year’s presidential race.

The free-wheeling Senate District 27 race in the Fredericksburg area features Republican Del. “I’ve always run a true independent campaign. But because the race could determine control of the state Senate, much of the focus has been on abortion. “I’ve always been very honest and transparent than I am pro life,” Durant said. Griffin, a Democrat, said he would leave current Virginia law in place but seek to enshrine abortion rights in the state constitution.

Virginia has seen nearly $1.7 million in outside spending for candidates in key 2023 races. All 140 seats in the Virginia legislature are up for grabs in districts that were recently redrawn. All 140 seats in the Virginia legislature — 100 in the House of Delegates and 40 in the state Senate — are up for grabs in November. But Democrats, who are seeking to maintain Senate control and win back the House, are competing hard for key seats in vote-rich metropolitan Richmond, Hampton Roads, and Northern Virginia. Youngkin has so far been unsuccessful in moving a 15-week abortion ban through the legislature, blunted by Democrats in the Senate.

A Democratic candidate in a key swing district is in the midst of a scandal over previous work in pornography. At least one prominent Virginia politician, Senate President Pro Tem L. Louise Lucas, immediately came to Gibson's defense, blaming operatives working for Virginia's Republican Gov. As it stands, Youngkin has said that it's his mission to implement a 15-week abortion ban in the commonwealth. So far, the only thing standing in his way has been the Virginia State Senate, where Democrats hold a slim 22-18 majority. So it falls to the voters of Short Pump, Virginia, to decide whether performing on Chaturbate is disqualifying for them, even if that means giving the go-ahead to a statewide abortion ban.

Lorie Smith , meet Elon Musk, Donald Trump and millions of other Americans who for more than 200 years have been able to say what they think, protected by the First Amendment. Thursday, in fact, is the Bill of Rights’ 231st anniversary, the law of the land since the Virginia Legislature’s ratification vote Dec. 15, 1791. Colorado, which joined the Union in 1876, wants the Constitution’s free-speech right to be significantly altered and is asking the U.S. Supreme Court to create a list of First Amendment exceptions.
